Board games are cheap entertainment!
Think about how much money we spend on movies, TV, internet, and the like yet we’ve neglected a relatively cheap form of entertainment – board games! Blueprint for Financial Prosperity reminded me of how cheap board games have become. You can get games like Monopoly or Scrabble for $11 off of Amazon. If you’re a little daring you could find those games for less if you bought them off eBay.
My girlfriend and I like to go out and see movies and after a while it really adds up. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve got to a movie and spent well over $20 to only wish we hadn’t even bothered. It seems like most movies these days just stink! Next time I’m going to suggest we just pick up a board game and play that.
Come to think of it, suggesting that we play a board game with a bottle of wine might be slightly romantic . . . . maybe I’m onto something here!

We occassionally break out an old skool Battleship game (before the blinking lights and sounds) and play that for about 20-30 minutes, its fun and quick and we feel insanely retro-hip doing it! LOL
Re: movies…we switched to early sunday matinees for a while to keep costs a lot lower (and didn’t buy snacks, just tickets) but honestly now we just wait and use Netflix.

Play board games with a bottle of rum, it’ll be more fun.
If you have a college ID, you might try to get student rates for movies. I’m in grad school and my girlfriend has her old ID and we get $2 off a $9 movie, any time, any day at Muvico.

Make sure you check rottentomatoes before you go catch a movie. The wisdom of crowds suggests that if a large enough set of critics agree on a movie’s quality, it will more likely translate as such. I use it religiously and have found that I never waste money on movies anymore. (I did so in the past though!)
My favorite board games require a large group of people. Cranium/Taboo/Pictionary. I suppose Monopoly might be more interesting to me now than before… As for adding wine to make it romantic, you are definitely on to something.

I don’t think I’ve ever used a review site before I’ve seen a movie. Me and the popular masses don’t have the same tastes.

My wife and I love to play Life and trivial pursuit (she likes the pop culture edition more). We dont play monopoly anymore because we are very very competitive and it ends up being a crazy real estate battle. Good times

Play cards, they are even cheaper or dice.

I love reading the articles on your site. I have a forum http://www.beerconsumer.net/forum which I am trying to get more members to and was wondering if you wanted to moderate the money board….check it out and let me know.

Cards are a good choice too and you can “find” new games for free.

We play cards, usually Casino or Rummy. It’s perfect for those nights when the baby is in bed and we want to spend some time together but we’re both ready to collapse within half an hour.
We also play Boggle and Speed Scrabble (no Scrabble board needed, just tiles).
I just bought a Book Lover’s Trivial Pursuit game at Toys R Us for ten bucks. I couldn’t believe it wasn’t a cash register error. I would love to get more games (we had a huge game closet in the house I grew up in) but the storage space is an issue.

In addition to being inexpensive, they are a great family activity - something that there seem to be a big lack of these days.
