How does FREE wireless internet sound?

January 24th, 2006 Posted in Frugal Living

Last year we saw a big movement towards free wireless internet. Places like Philadelphia and San Francisco solicited bids from private companies to install and provide city wide free access to their citizens. There was even some talk about Google offering free wireless internet as well.

The reality is that free internet is already here, you just have to know where to look for it! Many libraries offer free wireless internet as a service to the community, but many businesses like coffee shops and hotels are offering it up as part of their business model.

This is fantastic for you and me because while some places like Starbucks charge for access, there are many more that offer it for free. You could locate these by trial and error, but luckily there’s a shortcut.

My favorite is WiFi FreeSpot since it works well for me here in Atlanta. I can’t vouch for your city, but FreeSpot is worth checking out. If you’re not having any luck, just do a Google search for free wireless hot spots. I have a few friends who have canceled their wireless internet in favor of free wireless access. While I’m not ready for this switch, an extra $45.00 a month certainly adds up!

Then there is “piggy-backing” on your neighbors WiFi Network. A friend recently went apartment hunting in the Back Bay area of Boston with his laptop. If he liked the unit he would fire up his laptop and see how many unsecured WiFi networks were available. He ended up renting a place that gives him a choice of five strong wireless networks to use for free.

yes, piggybacking & wifi networks are great for general surfing, but remember, any info you transmit can be hacked fairly easily so if you ever use it to check your bank statements or pay bills, you’re leaving yourself wide open for identity theft.
